Once upon a time, in the Kingdom of Doha, lived a wise Brahmin (religious leader) named Sidhimantra. In addition, he lived with his son, Manik Angkeran. Young Manik was known for his sharp mind, but he had a tendency to be easily swayed by the opinions of others.

One day, while walking through the market, Manik stumbled upon a group of people who were gambling and wagering on cockfighting matches. Intrigued by their activities, Manik decided to join in. He used the savings from his piggy bank to purchase a sturdy rooster. With his prized bird by his side, Manik began to participate in the matches and quickly became known as the champion due to his cock’s consistent wins.

As time went on, he became more and more wrapped up in these activities because he wanted to become rich soon. However, his tired chicken began to lose and was no longer profitable for Manik Angkeran. Manik Angkeran’s addiction to cockfighting and gambling only worsened as he continued to lose more and more money. The more he gambled, the deeper he sank into debt and his father’s wealth began to dwindle to pay off his debts.

The father who loved his son so much begged the Gods for help. The guidance from the Gods directed Sidhimantra to meet Naga Besukih at Mount Agung. With a heavy heart, he implored Naga Besukih to bestow some of his riches upon Manik Angkeran to save him. Sidhimantra hoped that Naga Besukih’s generosity would steer his son back onto the path of virtue and redemption.

Unfortunately, the young man proved to be stubborn, and he was once again consumed by the thrill of betting. With no assets to repay his debts, Manik Angkeran found himself in a desperate situation. But then, he received a suggestion from his friend, who urged him to visit Naga Besukih and seek his help. With nothing to lose, Manik Angkeran set a journey to the towering Mount Agung, clutching his father’s clapper in his hand.

Naga Besukih planned to give Manik Angkeran some of his wealth for the last time, but Manik Angkeran was tempted to see the pile of wealth owned by Naga Besukih. He drew his sword at Naga Besukih to kill him and take his treasure, but failed and caused Naga Besukih to get angry. Naga Besukih’s anger was fueled by Manik Angkeran’s greed, and he unleashed his fiery wrath upon the young man. The heat was intense, and Manik Angkeran was reduced to ashes in an instant.

Siddhimantra went after his son to Mount Agung and found his son had become ashes. He begged Naga Besukih to bring his son back to life. Naga Besukih agreed, but on the condition that Manik Angkeran could not return with Sidhimantra and must stay here. After being revived, Sidhimantra took out his stick and drew a line separating himself and his son, and water rushed out of the line. The rushing water formed a puddle that separated Mount Agung from its surroundings, which became known as the Bali Strait which separates Bali Island and Java Island.
